Previously on Leaving the Light;
Toni started out an ordinary girl, an engineer by trade and lonely by heart. One early morning she's attacked and awakes in a strange place. She quickly learns she's taken captive by vampires and the one who kidnapped her is a man named Bram whom she's attracted to. There's no time for romance as another vampire, Keir, teaches her the harder side of life as a vampire slave. She meets the King of the vampires at a meeting of the vampires in which she must serve food and herself. Here she's humiliated by the vampire Heremon. She finds she can not fight them as they can control her mind as witnessed by the King forcing her to her knees.
Unable to fight she does try suicide as an escape route, but the vampires won't have it and they rescue her from death. She has befriended another slave, Lacey, who introduces her to the vampire, Mistress Kama, who frightens Toni by the sheer fact that she's a dominatrix. Fortunately she doesn't have an encounter with her other than cleaning all the blood she'd sprayed about her room. Toni then uses her engineering knowledge to bring a little fun to the slaves by building a radio which Keir immediately smashes. After being publicly attacked by Heremon, then privately by Keir, Bram lets her stay safely in his room. While their relationship builds she notices herself humming an unfamiliar tune which Bram walks in singing and wonders if there is some mental connection between them. Other than Bram, she has little hope in that place and finds a knife in her hiding place which she uses to attempt suicide again.
Trying to keep Toni satisfied and the other slaves happy the King called for the "Dance of Equanimity" which was pretty much musical human with vampires. Unfortunately, it didn't help especially when Bram refused to take his turn with her. Kama too tried her hand at getting Toni to remain there and happy, she made an offer to help Toni with Bram if Toni stopped trying to escape and commit suicide. It isn't easy, especially when other slaves, Gary in particular who is one of the top slaves, entices her with enough pills to put her in permanent sleep. Even though she tried, Kama, Bram, and Al (the slave who is her father figure) arrange an intervention which only makes her feel trapped and betrayed. It doesn't stop her from helping Al when Keir beats him, but she is still spiraling downward and while searching for a way out she befriends the jester Erik. No matter what she tries she can't die even accidentally when she breaks a gas pipe. This causes her to have hallucinations of knights and the world being destroyed all at her hand. Bram saves her from this too and kisses her for the first time.
Back to more or less normal life in the slave court she does electronics work for the vampires and slaves and at one point is assigned to fix a life support machine which, though she does, had been sabotaged to cause the death of a slave named Lowell. Because she realizes it was sabotage and she was blamed for it, she begins an investigation into his death despite being told to back off by the vampires. During her investigation she believes Lacey could have sabotaged the machine but finds her prints don't match. She had befriended another slave engineer named Wen that helped her with some of the technical aspects of her investigation, but he went missing halfway through leaving her to do it on her own. During all of this her friendship with Kama is blooming as is her relationship and mental connection with Bram, that is until he openly kills another slave. No need for investigation there. She's also experiancing strange dreams and hallucinations, none of which she really understands and makes her feel as if she's going insane. It doesn't help when Heremon challenges Bram and Toni winds up stabbing Heremon. Because of that, the King invades Toni's mind again and proves to her how weak she is. After this she tries harder to work on her mental abilities which Bram helps with. Unfortunately, there is evidence against Bram in Lowell's murder which makes her fear him.
A new slave, Mona, became friends with Toni and helps with the investigation. It doesn't last long as she exchanges blood with a vampire. Toni realizes the hard way how strict the vampires can be on others, yet wonders why she is spared. With the growing tension she begins accusing everyone including Kama of the murder then believes she has indisputable proof against Bram. Yet everything is not as it seems. As if to confuse things more, Erik gives her a mysterious box urging her to hide it and not open it. Finally she is able to touch Bram's mind and after some time, a fight, and urging by Kama, appologizes to him for accusing him. She makes love to him finding it to be true love.
Now she has only one suspect left; Kama. She has a dream about Kama killing her as well and begins to fear her. She and Bram become extremely close and he helps her to learn how to block out other vampires. Keir does not like any of this, nor how she and Erik played a joke on Heremon after he humiliated her in public. Keir places her in isolation in his room using her as his personal slave. He berates her and demeans her infront of other slaves. It is a good learning experiance as she learns how to completely block him out and how to pick locks. She also learns more about Bram. She sees through his eyes as he is about to kill a human outside of their complex and Keir explains he has killed more than nearly any vampire. She also learns Keir has a softer side and once loved someone himself. Mostly that experiance taught her that she could trust no one and gave her more reason to leave.
A man calling himself Velren appears out of nowhere before her as she hides in the closet. He tells her he wishes to help and hands her a vile that will put vampires to sleep. With hope of escape, she says good-bye to Bram and he gives her his sword. She overhears a vampire arguing with someone over a prophecy that she doesn't have time to investigate. She rushes for the exit and kills a vampire who stood in the way, all the others she managed to put to sleep. She's relieved to make it out of the vampire complex and finds herself in a small town. She runs to the sheriff for help, who in turn traps her as he works for the vampires. Before they come to get her, she has a chance to talk to him and learns he is Lacey's father and he is only helping them because of her. Once the vampires bring her back to their complex she is surprised they don't outright kill her. Instead she is put into sensory deprevation and left without anything but an iv feeding her. The King orders her to be whipped for her defiance and gives each of the slaves a lashing so that they won't help her in the future.
Despite her anger at Kama for committing murder and sabotaging the machine, she takes care of Toni after her punishment.
